Day 22 - Sunday 9th August

We left Camp Tahiti early(ish) this morning for the 4.5 hour drive to Banjole in Croatia (via Piran in Slovenia).

A quick picnic en route to the Italian border and we arrived in Slovenia early afternoon.  The Slovenian's have a very small coastline, but they certainly make the most of it!  We walked around the promenade past some very lovely hotels, harbours and gelato shops, enjoying the views of the approaching town.

Piran is crammed onto a small finger of land jutting out into the sea.  The Italian influence is evident in the architecture, but there is an unmistakable change in the people and the language (with us not being able to understand or speak even the most basic greeting.  A 10 minute lesson from a waiter and we finally mastered hula, which is apparently thank you.
Escaping the heat of the sea front we wandered through some of the narrowest streets we have seen.

We ate our first Eastern European meal of mixed grilled meats including then delicious  Ćevapčići meats and Bosnian flat breads, whilst enjoying the evening harbour vista.

Piran is shortlisted for Unesco world heritage status and was certainly well worth a few hours stop over.

We crossed the border into Croatia late in the evening - luckily the motorway toll could be paid on credit card as we have no Kuna yet!!  First job tomorrow morning to find a cashpoint!
